I'm hoping that they include a rep from the Xeno series.

Preferably Shulk.

It doesn't seem impossible but I'm kind of doubting it when putting him next to other reps that are much more popular. Like, sure, Nintendo threw in Ice Climbers and Pit (who weren't very well-known from what I see) but I'm not sure if they'd put in a Xeno rep before someone like, say, Mega Man (just taking him as an example).

Megaman is 3rd party.

Shulk would be 2nd party.

But those are first-party. Regardless of their lack of popularity, they're both Nintendo-owned (I'd say Nintendo-made, but I'm not sure of that, so I can't guarantee I'm right there), and that gives them more of a priority.

Smash isn't -just- about popularity though Kuro, it's also a homeage to Nintendo's long history in video games and what not yada yada. Not saying popularity is not a factor, but they also look to represent various nintendo eras through the roster.

Ice Climbers, as well as Pit (to a certain extend, the other extend would be to advertise the then-upcoming Uprising) were picked to represent 'Retro Nintendo'. Also considered for this role since Melee (source Smashwiki) were ExciteBikers and Balloon Fighter. So I'm guessing that if they'll expand on retro, Balloon Fighter'll get his chance this time around.

If Balloon Fighter gets in, i think he'd be best as an assist trophy. I think Little Mac from Punch Out deserves a spot as playable though, of course if he stays as an assist, thats fine.

i was referring to how Shulk's chances are low compared to other characters, but i probably shoulda mentioned part of why Pit and Ice Climbers got in
I'm still doubting Shulk, though, as I said. I mean, the characters who got in were already rather popular (although I'll admit I never knew who Snake exactly was before Smash, I heard of MGS though) and Shulk--while the game was well-received--isn't quite popular as other characters.

Uprising and Brawl are both Sakurai's games

Meaning we didn't know about Uprising until Brawl was out

Uprising was announced at E3 2010. While it's entirely possible that Sakurai was thinking about it at the time, it's probably more likely that the thought was "I'd like to make a game with this character I've just re-introduced to the public" rather than "I think I'll re-introduce this character to the public because I'd like to make a game about him later"

The latter is entirely possible of course but I'd say not as likely

According to Smash lore, Pit had been considered for both Melee and the original Smash but was denied due to a combination of problems. So that may have played a factor.

But I think it's more likely that within the ranks of Nintendo, interest in the character was starting to rise again around the developement of Brawl. Maybe as a result of Brawl, who knows.

Sounds reasonable. But I really don't think Pit being in Brawl to advertise Uprising is even remotely possible, is all I'm sayin'

Pit in Brawl to advertise Uprising: no.
Pit in Brawl to attempt to reintroduce him to the general public and a possible revive: yes.

I dont think Sakurai had the concept of Uprising at that time, just hoping for a revival of the series with a new game or something. Brawl was not meant to advertise a new game, just to re-familiarize the audience with the character/introduce the character to new players, so that they would be interested in a new game starring him. (pseudo-advertising)
