Is this really worth 40 bucks right now? I played the demo of it and it didn't do much for me, it really just looks like X and Y with a gen 3 skin on it. I am tempted but don't want to buy it if it's too similar to Y

I didn't buy Fire Red because it really just looks like Ruby and Sapphire with a gen 1 skin on it.

apparently there is a bug when you get to kyogre or groundon where if you use an escape rope it breaks the game and you can't proceed

Yeah, it just got disproved. There's a passage to the side that lets you progress even after the Pokemon has gone off to who knows where.
