this event as a whole was lol
the little "tournament" i went to was a Smash/Tekken/Mortal Kombat tournament. you had to have three in a group, one of you each plays a game against another team. best two out of three wins. why these games were connected was beyond me but anyways
the "trophies" were blocks of wood with this image on it:
now frankly as soon as i saw this, i was like "bleh". the counterstrike trophies didn't look like this, in fact they were this neat, black plastic base with a transparent top. the best thing i can really compare it to shape-wise is a gravestone. those looked a LOT nicer than the slabs of wood.
i spent $60 for my cousin and i to go to both participate. now, that's expensive. the reason it's expensive is because it's both
BYOC AND it's for the whole weekend (the event lasted three days). the only thing i wanted was the Smash tourney. i didn't want to bring my computer. my cousin didn't want to bring his computer. neither of us wanted to stay the whole weekend. but it's absolutely silly to have tickets for one day or non-BYOC tickets clearly. the only reason i signed up was because i thought i was going to a Smash tourney (they changed it AFTER i bought the ticket) and i only got my cousin's because, well, he likes video games and i'm going anyways, maybe we will have some fun!
we had to go through a lot of frustration to get him to be able to go because of his age. it took like a week to get to a conclusion with the people running the event. but we finally got him in.
so we get there. we get signed up, and we're told they'll find a team if we don't have one (and we didn't because we don't really know any people who play Mortal Kombat nor Tekken enough to want to "compete"). two of my friends just happened to be there so i got partnered with them, so they just had to find partners with my cousin and---
he's told that he's the odd one out and that he won't be able to participate. i was pissed. i spent $30 for the kid to have a good time and just because of some silly tournament format, he couldn't play?
eat s***. we went and managed to find two random people to join. one hasn't played mortal kombat in his life and the other one hadn't touched tekken in years, but because of how the silly thing worked, he needed them or else he couldn't play.
we still had some fun, but honestly almost nobody was really enjoying the event itself. we had more fun playing friendlies before it went on rather than the actual thing. i got eliminated in the semifinals (my friends both lost but I won by a landslide), as did my cousin (magically, considering his slap-together team). but hell, even the Smash player who won the thing said that the format was total s***. i played him later on and beat him on a fresh stock.
i don't really care that i didn't win the tourney as a whole since that slab of wood seriously looked
that bad. i don't intend to go to another one of their events again either. $30 for a couple of hours, and might not even get to participate if they try something even
dumber? (this tourney was the second dumbest thing they did this year) not going again.
