Alright, to be completely honest, I love these games, but I made this topic just so I could ask MG what they think about Metroid Prime (But I'm not gonna disallow talking about Metroid Prime in other ways, that's just ridiculous).

Can someone please tell me how this game is not a first-person shooter? I've seen many things that say it isn't an FPS for a few reasons:

>It has many puzzles
>You're not always shooting things
>It's not always first-person

Now, okay, reading these quickly may make you go "Oh, yeah, they're right" but there are things against this. In the same order:

>Just because it has many puzzles does not mean it's not first-person and a lot (although not all of it) of the game focuses on shooting. I do not see myself solving bazillions of puzzles in boss fights, I see myself shooting them. I also see myself shooting lots of enemies and doors and switches.
>With this claim, does this mean I can turn on some other FPS like Call of Duty, leave it on for an hour without shooting anything, and it's no longer an FPS? And you're not always shooting things in FPS games either. You could be riding vehicles that don't always have guns and that sort of stuff as well.
>I have played a few FPS games to say that even Halo isn't always first-person and yet it's still a first-person shooter.

Tl;dr, it's first-person and you shoot a lot of stuff.

It's a first person adventure, one that happens to have some shooting in it.
The exploration, backtracking and puzzle-solving is too heavy of an element for it to be considered an FPS over an FPA, as the adventure aspects are more key than the shooter aspects. Has nothing to do with you "not always shooting" or "not always being FPS".

Either way it's a f*** fantastic series that I recommend to everyone, Metroid Prime is one of the best games I've ever played and Corruption isn't far behind. Echoes isn't up there with the other two but it's still really good.

I understand that it has a lot of exploration, backtracking, puzzle-solving, and all of that, but is it impossible for it to be both genres?

It's a "first person shooter" in the sense that you shoot things in the first person point of view, but the gameplay isn't based solely on shooting. The Metroid games are exploration/adventure games, and the Prime series is the same. It can't really be classified as a "first person shooter" when there's so little focus on gunplay and so much focused on exploration.

Echoes had multiplayer that was f*** incredible, which kinda makes it just as good as the other two in my opinion.

The FPS genre tag leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I consider Prime an example of a good FPS, mainly because of the adventure elements listed above.

Prime is an incredible game. Echoes isn't nearly as good as Prime, but it's not bad. Corruption is pretty good, but I have no final word since it's still on my backlog currently.

Of course it can be both genres, but if you're listing one, then FPA is much more appropriate than FPS.
