Jeez. People can't leave proper criticism now and days.

You sprite at whatever pace you feel comfortable with first off. Anyway let's look at this screen shot.
http://prntscr.com/4ogyu1

What is that highlighted in green?
The line I put there in red is to show that his face has no proportions at all. It's uneven.
In regard to the blue boxes, this tutorial here explains on how smooth outlines look and how to help your sprite look better overall. Another thing is everything inside the sprite doesn't have to be outlined with black.

This one here is also a good place to read up on as well.

But to continue, choosing the right color palette is another thing to keep in mind, Brown + Black + Green + Purple + White + Red, you almost have the whole rainbow there xD. Not that it's a bad thing but it helps if you manage to minimize the amount of colors on a sprite. Makes it easier on the eyes. Another thing are tones. Most spriters just go for a darker version of the same base color, but understanding color hues or rather playing with it will help you a long way. Example would be for that brown, if you lightened it up a bit and used a dark (not too dark) purple, the contrast will come out nicely and you'll most likely get compliments on your color schemes. There was this awesome tutorial that explained it for me perfectly back when. I'll upload it for u if you're interested.

Either way, if you like to sprite don't give up. Absorb criticism, push out mindless comments and have fun.
I hope this wasn't too much or anything.

For the record, he's not really spriting. He's just doodling on paint with the pencil. So I don't consider these as sprites as they are drawn clearly by the hand and not pixel-by-pixel. If you are really confident that what you are posting is a sprite, you must be confident enough to just post it in its original resolution. Also, we don't need a time frame on how long it took you to make that sprite. You devoting only 5 and 30 minutes tells us that you didn't put enough effort in it, not that you work fast.

Even so, I don't see the reason people are hostile towards his work. Whether it was pixel by pixel or not, doesn't mean anything.
Not trying to make someone's hobby into a job. He'll improve if given correct criticism/advice. Telling him that he sucks and that he puts no effort into his work isnt making him better.

Why not tell people how long my work takes? Maby that could help you guys give fair criticism I don't know.
EDIT: Also thanks for the help Jayden, it really means a lot. I'll use you and sage's advice and get better.

TBH the time frame isn't as important as it seems.

if you're going to post stuff at an increased resolution you should also post them at the original so we can see what it looks like at normal size

i'm gonna guess it's a... tree creature?

You should post it in normal resolution to make lives easier. Sometimes things zoomed in look bad but from afar it works very well.
Don't look at it as "I'm going to ruin it." Look at it as you're going to get better.
The outline looks a lot better though and it seems you're getting the hang of it. What seems to mess you up is shading and choosing the right colors.

Indeed it is, his name is cheese.

Anyways, I resized him, I didn't increase the resolution.

Well I want him to have 2x2 pixels.

but that makes it harder to critique
and there's no reason to other than not having to zoom in which i doubt is that big of a deal

I really don't think presenting your sprites as larger than the original size is that big of a deal. It certainly doesn't hamper your ability to "critique", I believe.

Personally, I think seeing the sprite at it's original size could help judge the palette because you can see how much the palette contrasts more easily, and if someone wants to make a quick edit they don't need to resize it; I can't speak for everyone of course.

I do think it's fine if you want to make it a bit harder for people to steal it though.
