I was wondering if it would be ideal to make a smash game or fighting game in Unity since that's the engine I'm currently trying to learn.

If I remember correctly, Unity's a terrible engine for 2D games. That might have changed, though, as I remember something about them attempting proper 2D support.

Actually, I know some folks making a engine in unity, so I think they did at least a decent job on the 2D support.

As late as this reply is, Unity is (in my opinion) perfect for a smash game, stage building is easy on designers, 2d works fine (but a 2d movement with 3d models would take advantage of unity engine a bit better), and the lighting is the best it can be.
