I knew that... but I couldn't resist.

What? The reasoning on the first page is still correct...

Not exactly. You can't just kill off a square like that even if they equal. You must try to understand... well, if I overlooked something on the front page, then I still finished it, eh?

Err.... yeah you can. Take the square-root of both sides, takes care of that square. (You're finding ways around the flaw, but you haven't spotted the flaw yet)

Roy, just because your a mod. You can't edit a person's post just for fun.
(I might let you though, if you suggest pauzle as a new mod ;p)

2 - 3/2 = 1 - 3/2
2 - 1.5 = .5
1 - 3/2 = -.5
THEREFORE 2 - 3/2 > 1 - 3/2.

I'm afraid you really can't. Because, if you do, you get: 0.5 = -0.5 and obviously that's wrong. Square those, however, and they're the same thing. ... ... ...nnnnnnnnnnnnnnno...

You're getting there... but that's not the correct answer.
Why is taking the square root of both sides not working here?

I hate proofing... just because numbers may be equal, doesn't mean their square roots are equal. Down here are some examples. All it takes is one example to prove a conjecture (in this case, square roots of equal numbers are also equal) false. EXAMPLE1--shows when this conjecture is true(1+1)^2 = 2^2 1+1 = 2 2 = 2. True. EXAMPLE2--shows when this conjecture is false5^2 = (-5)^2 5 = -5. False. Sorry for the lame quote thing, but hey... did I actually hit it yet???

One counterexample doesn't mean this one is false. Hey, 2=2, right? Square Root 2=Square Root 2, right? You're hitting all around it, but you haven't proved it false yet.

You're more insaciable than my proofing in adv. math/geometry/whatever... does the problem lie in the transition from 4 - 6 + 9/4 = 1 - 3 + 9/4 to (2 - 3/2)^2 = (1 - 3/2)^2?

What's wrong with that? (2-3/2)(2-3/2)=4-6+9/4. There's nothing wrong there.

WAIT-- 4 - 6 + 9/4 = 1 - 3 + 9/4 (2 - 3/2)^2 = (1 - 3/2)^2 (2/-2 has no even square root.) Whoa... wassup wit dat!? That must be the error. If not I'm going to ask my math teacher if he'll extend my hjomework deadline just to solve this thing!! (No, of course not really.)

Well, you're on the right track... but... .5^2=-.5^2, right? in this case... let's take the square root of both sides. .5=-.5, right? Or is there something wrong here?
