OK, so I've done a number of these, and I am doing this one last time because of my latest project; Scott Pilgrim-style sprites of all 12 trolls from Homestuck! So far, i have done one sprite of Karkat Vantas. Here it is;

Tell me what you think! Don't know what Homesuck is? Go to the MSPA official site!

I'm gonna focus on making single sprites of each so I can make an epic banner. Then I'll make complete sheets.

I think the shades used in the pants could have better contrast.

Grabbing a sprite of scott pilgrim, slap different colors on his body, and giving him hair/horns isn't really a great way to make these homestucks in scott-pilgrim style.

I suggest using a reference: Take a sprite of scott pilgrim and an image of Karkat Vantas as a reference. Look carefully at how the scott pilgrim style is sprited and either edit the Scott sprite to Karkat (As long as its hard to tell from its base sprite) or make it fully custom. Either one of those two should result out pretty well

If he's a beginner he should start with simple recolors to start to understand how certain shades effect one another. Then work his way up(Maybe learning proper anatomy or something else)

Actually, I did EXACTLY what he said. Remember, this is the first sprite, and I'll give him his sickle once I get the base sprites done. This is, after all, my first attempt at this style. Also, I'm gonna do Gamzee afterwards. Anyone got suggestions on who would be the best choice to edit?

You've got to be kidding me..

This recolor itself shows that he already knows how to recolor. Recoloring is not a spriting technique. Its spending 30 seconds giving it a different color. If you still need to practice recolor, then thats worse than training wheels my friend

He should focus more on editing the sprite to distinguish it from the basic scott pilgrim sprite.

Doesn't neccesarily mean the deed is undone, but enfin, moving on;

As for the sprite, there is a huge contrast in the.. contrast. Whilst there is a lot of contrast going on on the pants, the shirt and skin have little of it. Overall the colour pallet makes the sprite very boring to look at. Like a downgraded Scott Pilgrim sprite with exploded hair.

Also for a single project it's fine, but if you plan to keep on spriting and you want to get better then I'd suggest stopping with editing and starting by the start first: basics like outlines and shading. Edits are great to give you insight in a style, but that is only half of it (the second half, usually). Of course it's completely up to you and with spriting it's always a matter of doing the thing that brings you the most joy.
