Researchers have found the earliest archaeological evidence of a tortoise being kept as a family pet in Britain, at a castle in Staffordshire.

What saddens me is the fact that the researchers refer to witchcraft in the context of the Middle Ages. Belief in witches was mostly a Renaissance, post-reformation phenomenon, not a mediaeval one. Such a historical misunderstanding? :?

Yet it would've been easy to simply look it up.

Eh, well I was taught by one of the creators of the World History AP exam, and he knows he s***.

But still, that is still common knowledge and I would have known it even if he didn't teach me.

The Renaissance starts in Italy after the High Middle Ages, around 1300. In other countries, the Renaissance starts about after the Late Middle Ages, around 1500. Since I said Renaissance, not Italian Renaissance, I meant the one starting around 1500. The Enlightenment starts in the 18th century as others said.

Also, what a villainous development of discussion!

So technically the Northern Renaissance, where secular views were combined with Christian views, Erasmus had his comment on practically everything, etc, then. Well this is awesome. Brings back memories from AP European History. Aaagh that dreaded exam. But learned a lot though.

As for the pet... royal owners make that one happy tortoise. Especially since royalty rarely ever fell victim to those darned witch hunts.

I barely noticed the reference to the middle ages. That's just sad... These reporters need to brush up on their history before they publish things like that. :hmph:

I thought this is the best place to post this, since I don't want to spam another topic into existence today. :P

Poaching. I really dislike that practice, but the fact is, it is often a way to make a living on the edge. As put forward by green politics, people can only be expected to care for the environment if alleviated from immediate poverty.
