Also, can you play publicly with people in rooms where anyone can join or do you have to set up private rooms? (I know a certain other Smash fan game that's crap in that regard, lol)

You can do both. You can host a public room and wait for people to join it, but you can also put a password on the room so only people that know the password can join.

The lag really depends on the connection of both players. I had one match that went really smoothly, and another where it was like playing in slow motion.

I was one of the lucky 5000, but it's been almost a whole week since I got the email and I still can't activate my account...

Only the first batch of 3k was in order. The other 1k was random, and all future ones will be random as well

I played online again and these two guys just ganged up on me they weren't even fighting each other until I died

There really is no point sending activation messages unless people can activate them. LOL

The website has to be up for people to be able to activate.
