Guitar or Bass... have you ever ripped off the tough part of your fingers skin?
I don't mean the little scrapes you get in the first month of playing, I mean I literally tore off a huge layer of skin on my ring finger. This happen to anyone else?
If so are there any solution to keep playing after, or just suck it up and keep playing with barely any padding. I could try a bandadge I guess... but I don't really have anything to use.

Happens once in a while, especially while playing bass
I ripped off a chunk of my palm and bled all over my new bass a while back :(

That skin you've ripped off is a callous, you should be careful with that and probably have it disinfected. Callouses are notorious for getting infected and becoming larger problems from something actually quite simple. Just keep it clean and you should be good.

I thought the callous was a good thing in regards to instrument playing. I think using a pick helps prevent one caused by instrument playing, but I only played guitar for a year.

Kiki bass calluses are ugly mishappen lumps that feel like leather
I ripped off the soft spot on my palm and I'm pretty sure golem's talking about that on his fingers

Aren't callouses formed as a result of playing the guitar?

Any stringed instrument produce callouses, especially those you pluck, like the harp.

Bass has much higher gauge strings that are thicker.
The thicker the strings on the instrument, the more pronounced the callouses will be.

Yep I ripped of the callous on my left ring finger, I cleaned it up and just left it. Should be fine now, thanks though Kiki for warning me about it getting infected because I wasn't aware it could get serious.
and yes bass strings kill your fingers a lot faster then guitar strings, especially with lots of sliding.

Not from plucking/slap, I mean from actual fretting.
