I'd rather kill an insect than a mammal, and I'd rather kill a cell than an insect.

Insects.

How close you are to sentience determines your worth and value?

Does it give you the right to live?

It most certainly does, the only way this would not follow is if intelligence isn't valuable (which it is). Does it give someone the right to live? In nature, no one has rights sadly.

Not sure how much you enjoy reading philosophical arguments, but I think you'd find R. G. Frey, "The Case Against Animal Rights" interesting. It's a thoughtful rebuttal to Tom Regan's argument for the total elimination of commercial and sport hunting and other ideas similar to yours.

In America all Gazelles and Lions and Candirú have the same civil rights. Even the Floridian Meningitis Snails.

Pretty much this. Living organisms die in nature everyday for better or worse. Deciding who to "kill" may not be pleasant but in life we are frequently forced to compromise; hence using rats as test subjects.

Also, thanks for the suggestion agent. I'l probably give that book a read.
