It most certainly does, the only way this would not follow is if intelligence isn't valuable (which it is). Does it give someone the right to live? In nature, no one has rights sadly.
Not sure how much you enjoy reading philosophical arguments, but I think you'd find R. G. Frey, "The Case Against Animal Rights" interesting. It's a thoughtful rebuttal to Tom Regan's argument for the total elimination of commercial and sport hunting and other ideas similar to yours.
