I'm also in a conspiration theory that Cloud's reveal was more of a way to attract attention to the direct and will not necessarily be that hype. Like let's say KFC said Scarlett Johansson was there and once you arrive to get that autograph they offer you a product that you don't really mind.

ROB was one of the reasons Nintendo managed to sell a video game console after the market crashed. People didn't give a s*** about video games after so many awful ones came out (wow, sounds familiar), so Nintendo included things like ROB and the light gun to make it seem more novel. Duck Hunt is also representative of this.

Nintendo have sold over 48 million Game & Watch units and if it never existed, they probably would have never made the Game Boy. The Game & Watch was also designed by Gunpei Yokoi, so including Mr. Game & Watch in Melee might have been a tribute to him as well.

the opening of the game plays once per playthrough. many people played the game like, 10 years ago. i bought it roughly two years ago, started it multiple times, still didn't recognize the theme even after replaying the trailer like 20 times
