DVDV's Brain Teasers

Basically, in this section, I ask questions, brain teasers and you answer them. These could be riddles, cryptic crossword questions, anything like that. Feel free to PM me any you have and they probably will end up being used at some point.

Please don't use the internet, most of the time I will make up my own, but the times in which I don't, I would hope that you have the decency not to cheat.

I will be keeping score. Oh, and you have one week, one guess per day but changing your answer is allowed as long as I haven't addressed the answer. You cannot get points for answering your own question.

Styles of Questions: show
Brain Teasers: questions generally only requiring a knowledge of maths. There will be both logic and lateral puzzles.
Cryptic Crossword questions: Questions with clues that aren't straight forward. As there are many ways of solving them as there are many sorts of them, go Here for more help

Questions: show
Introduction Question (cancelled)
Food preparer sounds like a good prostitute (answer was "pheasant plucker")

Question Number 1 (riddle)
Sound of dog, cover of log was answered by WarPandaXI (answer was "bark")

Question Number 2 (riddle)
What can be saved, bought, spent, invested and served, but never given?
Answered by Eraser (answer was "time")
+1 To Blue for pointing out that you can give time.

Question Number 3 (Brain Teaser)
A man is on camp hunting, camp set up and the like. He travels 1km south looking for a bear. By the time he reaches 1km south, he finds a bear (what a coincidence, exactly 1km!). Unfortunately, his gun won't fire and his knife was dropped on the way so he has to run away. After 1km running east, he escapes the bear and, utterly exhausted, decides to travel 1km north, back home. What colour was the bear? (If you are American, replace km with mile and you'll be fine)
Answered by Tid with correct reasoning (answer was "white" because the only way this travel pattern could occur is if his camp was on the North Pole)

Question Number 4 (Pattern)
What letter comes next in the series s h o n i x?
Answered by Dark with correct reasoning (Answer was Z (only other letter that, when rotated 180 degrees, appears the same))

Question Number 5 (Grammar insertion)
Add in grammatical signs in the following sentence (ie. captial letters, full stops etc.)
that that is is that that is not is not is that it that is it
Answered by Blue Mage (Answer was "That that is, is. That that is not, is not. Is that it? That is it.")

Question Number 6 (Lateral thinking)
A plane is travelling over the Pacific Ocean when it discovers that it will not have sufficient fuel to land at the next airport due to poor weather conditions that they just passed through. In order to save themselves, items start being tossed overboard. First to go were two sturdy wooden, airtight boxes of the same size and dimensions, one full of lead and one completely empty. If they were both thrown off the plane at the same time, which would hit the ground first?
Answered by BelieveBlood (Answer was while gravity laws state that two objects of the same mass and dimensions dropped from the same height will hit the ground at the same time, the plane is flying over the water so this doesn't matter, instead, whichever item will sink first will hit the ground first, in this case, the lead filled one.

Question Number 7 (Logic)
Which came first? The chicken or the egg? (Give reasons for your answer)
Answered by Maxmatsu ([spoiler]Answer was "the egg". Fish eggs came before any bird.

Question Number 8 (Logic and lateral thinking)
Which one is the odd one out: a king, a queen, an emperor or a bishop?
Answered by Snoble with correct reasoning. (Answer was "the king". It was the only option that had no unique characteristics. The bishop was the only occupation restricted to the church, it also was not deemed royalty. The queen was the only one that can only be female. The Emperor is the only one not a chess piece. There are many other things making the other characters unique but those are just a few examples)

Question Number 9 (Logic and mathematical ability)
Using four fours as well as any other mathematical signs (powers and x roots must have a four and only a four), make the numbers 1 to 10. An example for "0" could be "4/4 - 4/4"

Current Question:
Using four fours as well as any other mathematical signs (powers and x roots must have a four and only a four), make the numbers 1 to 10. An example for "0" could be "4/4 - 4/4"

Scores: show
Blue Mage - 2
Tid - 1.5
WarPanda - 1
Eraser - 1
Dark - 1
BelieveBlood - 1
Maxmatsu - 1
Snoble - 1

How is this even possible?
Don't you need a grid to play a cryptic crossword?

Ok for the record the answer was "pheasant plucker"

Very simple, straightforward riddle:

Sound of dog, cover of log

Roof. Although, most roofs aren't made of wood.
