I don't play Fox, but I'm pretty sure I can help you out here. Don't use ground attacks, only use aerials, aside from the occasional up-tilt or Up-smash. Specials are allowed to be used on the ground, but only rarely, also apparently you need to multi-shine consistently in order to be a real fox player, if you can't you are considered to be a disgrace to all Foxes around here.

1. Shine 2. Jump 3. Air dodge diagonally downwards 4. Run 5. Jump 6. See step 1 7. When you get bored, upsmash
Keep this up, your fox gameplay and abilites will shine through all the haters.

Go to e621 and search for "Fox McCloud" there are great tutorials on how to play Fox.

Actual serious answer (such a tryhard I know):
Learn2ShortHop. Seriously. If you can't do that, you're never going to be good. After that, learn basic Shine tech. Shine -> JC grab, Shine -> JC Usmash, Shine -> JC aerial should all be automatic and fairly reliable before you start playing seriously in matches (although it will get better as you play more without dedicated practice).
In neutral, nair all the time. Nair is safe on shield if you hit with it late, so do that. If they're shielding, you can Shine -> aerial or jump away, Shine -> grab, double shine -> grab, etc., as long as you're confident in your techskill. Let's just say people shouldn't shield that much. Be extra careful of baits near the edge (Sheik/Link/DK/Zelda/MM bthrow), but realize that because you know they'll spam shieldgrab if you're confident in your play you can get some easy stuff.
Combos: nair is amazing, and you can chain nairs into either uair or bair. Those two aerial finishers are your bread-and-butters for ending combos: bair gets them offstage and kills fast-fallers, and uair kills floaties. Utilt -> uair kills Puff and the like really early, but if they get good DI you can't always connect it.
Uthrow -> uair and uthrow -> bair (or uthrow -> shine -> bair for style) are your basic grab finishers, dthrow for characters uthrow doesn't work on.
Drill combos into everything because no one Smash DI's in this game, so drill -> utilt or whatever usually works.
Just grind out your basic fast-faller combos (example: in the Fox ditto, dtilt -> grab -> utilt -> regrab -> uair -> bair) until they're consistent, because you don't want to mess those up.
About recovery: just realize that the Fox Illusion you think is a cool mixup is going to get read like a book. Shortens are amazing, so use those, but a lot of Foxes spam Illusion to stage and that's super easy to read. Learn to sweetspot and learn how to be tricky with Firefox angles (for example, some positions let Fox get to stage from hitting below the edge on SV, some don't). That's it for now, really just feeling comfortable with basic tech in neutral (nair -> shine -> bair is 34% IIRC and EZ money) and not dying offstage (the hard part!).
I guess one last thing: good defensive reflexes will save your life. Know what moves you can DI down and tech, and which ones you should DI in to survive. Some moves can even be SDI'd down and teched in the middle like Pika's dsmash, and with platforms you can tech even more things (ToS platforms especially). If you don't DI and tech really well, you're going to get 0-deathed every stock which is no fun, so get good reflexes on being hit and make sure that you don't mess up DI and die to Zelda dsmash at 0% or something, which is embarrassing.
