I honestly was very very very upset with Cloud being included, like...there were so many SQUARE characters that could've been there but...they pick Cloud.

I get it, I get it, he's famous. It's a good decision on Nintendo's part, really. His presence just...annoys me. And this is coming from a guy who's only beat VII, so honestly I kinda scream fanboy in any FF discussion if that's put out there (but I love VI the most, I've at least played all of the old ones once)

I'd like to know who your picks would be for a SE rep. Personally my vote was biaised towards Cloud for being the first FF character I've known, so I can't really argue that there's someone other than him that fits with Sakurai's mind.

Sora and Geno would leap to the minds of a lot of fans in regards to a Square rep in Smash. There are others but those two are the most common.

A game Nintendo has yet to show any reverence for. From a company that just LOVES to reference & piggyback their older work, Geno has only made one tiny cameo appearance since his debut, and as far as I know that's the only reference they've made to SMRPG since

There's a certain Internet fondness for the game, but the character himself is basically forgotten outside of a small number of Internet Smash players

The reality is that he's an extremely obscure & forgotten character among both Nintendo and Square's libraries, and if he's ever seen again, it's almost definitely not going to start in Smash

In my defense, I wasn't saying that I want Geno in Smash, I was just saying that he's a popular choice in Smash speculation for some reason.

He has some online supporters, but it's important to understand that the voice for him is a lot smaller than you think

The people who take this game seriously enough to talk about it on the Internet are a pretty small minority, and I can promise you Geno's not got a big following among casuals

Not to mention that western opinions as a whole are only a fraction of the audience; it's hard to say what Japan thinks of the character

This is why I want to see the poll results so much, I doubt they're anything like what people are expecting

i'd use the argument that geno hasn't got any major reapperances due to the fact that it was made by Square (basically what happened to the Donkey Kong Country frachise during the 2000s) and they'll need licensing.
But given the fact that Mario has made a s*** ton of sport crossovers with square it truly seems like they forgot entirely about the character

I know that but to be fair, Shulk used to be really obscure too. Believe it or not, a lot of people had never even heard of Xenoblade Chronicles until Smash speculation came up. I know because I was one of those people.

In fact, a lot of characters were obscure at the time of their debut in Smash. Ness, Captain Falcon, the Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Pit, the Wii Fit trainer, and the aforementioned Shulk. Hell, even Takamaru was planned to appear in Smash 4 with his obscurity ironically being the reason why he got demoted to an assist trophy.

Cloud is pretty much Square. No other character comes close to his level of recognition, or popularity.

I never suggested Geno, I was just saying that he's a somewhat popular choice in Smash speculation as far as a Square-Enix rep goes.

And yes, I know that popularity and obscurity aren't factors when choosing characters for Smash. I was just making a connection between Geno and Shulk.

Also, I'm not even in the crowd of people that's begging for Geno in Smash. I would have preferred Sora as a SE rep but I understand why they went with Cloud what with him being the face of JRPGs and all.

What was sort of being said though was that Geno isn't actually even a somewhat popular choice for Smash speculation. It feels like that to you because you're obviously a relatively active internet user, and that's where you'll meet, obviously, other active internet users. Which is correlated pretty heavily with the (actually rather small) demographic of folks who even know who Geno is, let alone want him in Smashbros. Remember that a huge portion of people that play and enjoy smash aren't going to be on the internet talking about it. It's just that the only ones who are are also the ones who would consider Geno as a Smash addition.
