I haven't played the game, but it's a tower defense style game, right?
What if one of his specials erected a tower? Maybe it would shoot at enemies that get close, or have other basic defenses from the game defending it. Maybe Dillon has to defend it, but it gives him stat boosts as long as it's up. Maybe he could even get two or three out, if he can defend his other ones well. It would only be up for so long, it would have a noticeable cooldown time and it could be destroyed, but it would have a good amount of strategic potential.
(In case it isn't clear yet, I think the best thing they could do is give newer characters moves that are stupidly overpowered in concept, and making them work. Uniqueness is something Smash really needs)

Smash Bros. not having enough uniqueness is an opinion, in my opinion.
Personally I think that if Dillon gets in, his moveset will revolve around his personal combat and weapons. Characters in smash bros. usually don't play as ports of the gameplay of the origin series anyway.

Playstation All Stars is what made me realize it. I mean, Smash is full of things like -slash -punch -special that looks like something the character could do, even if they haven't ever done it That doesn't apply to every character, obviously, but it shows up a lot. If you take a look at some of the PASBR characters, a lot of them feel like they were pulled right out of their games - Jak and Sly come to mind, since I'm a big fan of those games. Nathan can create a bit of cover to shoot from behind (Which is unbelievably clever). All the characters in the beta have very different playstyles. I feel like, in Smash, they're fighting and all, but in many cases they aren't representing their games as well as they could have. A bit of added uniqueness based on the ideas their games are built around would be an excellent thing. And I'm not even gonna get started on clones/near clones. That argument's been done to death, I won't go into it, but I find it hard to look at all that and say Smash doesn't need more uniqueness

You could also think about it this way, there arent that many Nintendo characters that have a whole lot of material to draw from for movesets. So obviously they have to make the rest up.
Link uses his classic weapons from the games, but when they added in Zelda, there were probably at a loss for ideas for specials unique to her, so they just gave her the goddess spells from OoT despite having never used them herself. Though her character is likely capable of using them, and probably why they dont serve the same exact functions in Smash as they do in the Zelda games.
Or even for a character like Mario, how much of a material drawn moveset can they possibly give him, unless they allow him the use of the various powerups from his series, he doesnt have a whole lot that he can do, because most of his abilities come from the various powerups.
You can say this for just about every character, i think maybe Mr Game & Watch, and Sonic are two of the few characters who have their entire moveset (or mostly) come from their games, everybody else has something made up for them for Smash.

True, but you can't look at the three landmasters and tell me Sakurai cares a lot about making the characters unique based on their games. Hell, I've never even played Starfox and I came up with better ones for Wolf and Falco in five minutes.

Lol yeah there's plenty of unimaginative and uncreative stuff in there. Sonic actually has a 1 up on everyone else for actually appearing in two fighting games before appearing in Smash, so he actually has more than enough material to draw from for a moveset.

Can you guys stop shooting down other people's opinions and actually add something to the conversation? If Final Smashes return id like to see some characters get different ones, as in nobody's directly mimics another.

sorry you guys are right even tho half of melee's cast is still viable after 11 years each for totally different reasons, sakurai doesn't care about making characters unique because the completely unimportant feature of final smashes in the game he didn't want to make had repeats

So the alleged statement by Sakurai saying that he wanted Final Smashes since the first game wasnt true? Thats just sad though, i mean if you really dont put much effort into certain things, the game may end up dying pretty early. I mean im sure it will still be awesome for a while, but it could end up like those games that everybody talks about for maybe a year (probably less) then everyone forgets about it.
