I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet, but how are we going to manage input delay when it comes to online tournaments? If we all were to agree to keep it on Normal, how do we prove that someone isn't doing so?

I think most tournaments just ignore that side of things: because lag is symmetric, it doesn't really imbalance the game. Connections that fundamentally change the game because they're too laggy are usually dealt with by simply DQ'ing people or something like that.

But it does: we can have Player A who is used to playing with high input delay versing Player B who's used to playing with normal input delay. If Player A hosts the room with high input delay, Player B will not be able to perform well since he is not used to that input delay. It's not the game that will be lagging, it's the controller/keyboard inputs that are.

That's like saying "it's unfair that I'm not used to the stage my opponent counterpicked me too" or something like that: it's part of the game. Unfortunately, part of being good at SSF2 is dealing with lag, and so players need to get good at dealing with it. Just learn how to play in all sorts of connections.

lag and input delay aren't the same thing codey. Pull your head out your a** and read some more.

he gave an example that was similar to why TASky could not play in tournaments, and why DE made a potato clause for his tournies. Certain people always play at a certain 'lag' level and if they play someone else who has a perfect 2 ping, 50 upload, 50download. the person with the great connection would be at a severe disadvantage.
And with that example stated, input delay would be a toggleable lag- meaning it can be increase or decreased as a way to *intentionally* 'lag' the game to disadvantage another player.
What if you and I were playing grandfinals in a super stacked tourny? 2/2 playing for the last game, you and I were playing perfect connections and then I decide to turn on TASky mode, or even high input delay. Would this not put YOU and only YOU at a severe disadvantage since I am 'accustomed' to the lag and input delay?

Now as far as determining input delay in tournaments; just start with low and play a quick bit. If it lags more than you or they like; move up to normal. Rinse and repeat.
What you are suggesting to him, code, is that EVERYONE should only play on high input delay so that we are all on fair grounds, which is simply unreasonable for those of us in the competitive scene who have on average great connections with each other.

We really should not expect test matches to happen every single set. Just use normal. It's a difference of one frame from low. No johns

As I understand it, input delay is symmetric, no? The game moves synchronously, so don't inputs get polled at the same time? If not, that's different. Agree with TSON nontheless though.

Only one frame? Huh, it felt longer to me.

Then again, the game runs at 30 fps, so I guess 2 frames is a bit more noticeable.

When I play online, I always use the lowest delay setting.

I find that I always have a lot less lag going on when Input delay is on high. It's frustrating to deal with, but not as frustrating as lower FPS. Besides, it's easy to get used to. I think Input delay should be high by standard.

Actually, do they? Could be my imagination, but it seems like being Player 1 on maximum quality settings gives a noticeable advantage, as though my opponent's reflexes were slower, even though my machine is fast enough to not lag on max settings.

Input delay/lag in general kinda ruins the game for me

It makes the game less about reactions and more about reads

It's especially obvious when grabbing gets punished by F Smash somehow, and no, it wasn't Link or Samus that I used

Do you always have laggy matches or are some of them really smooth? Make sure graphics are set to "Minimum" to improve game speed. I've found putting my computer's IP on my network's DMZ list, bypassing firewall, to really help. So much so that if I have a laggy match, I guarantee you it's my opponent's connection (and it's P2P, so you're limited by the slower connection).

Beyond that, I'm not a network guy and won't be of much help

It's called "Internet Speed", and it's my fault lol

Hell, I can play Lloyd online at Medium Graphics and it feels the same as playing Wario on Low Graphics

All this talk about lag...
And I'm sitting here with an issue of sudden disconnections.
