For third party characters? I'd have to say Megaman, Simon Belmont, (And before anybody says Julius or Soma Cruz, keep in mind that Simon is the first playable character in the series, and he is the best possible rep.) or maybe Tails.

I'm hoping for Pacman and Taizo Hori (that's Dig dug) from Namco
Sora, Riku, and Cloud from Square Enix
Mega Man and maybe Phoenix Wright for Capcom

Black Mage would be a much better addition if you think about it. I just feel indifferent with every Smash fan saying that Cloud should be in Smash Brothers. It just won't work and it just won't do. Cloud never had any part with nintendo to even begin with. Even though Snake now is mostly on the playstation side of games, He did make his debut on the NES. Sonic was just a rival to Mario much and as Kyuubit said, Sonic fans constantly have been begging very much for him to make the next Super Smash Brothers game.

I'm just saying Cloud is the face of FF.
He appears in both KH: CoM and Theatyrhythm FF.
Black Mage would be nice, but won't happen without Cloud first.
Lloyd from Namco would also be good in official Smash If they did him right.

Layton's one of my most wanted characters. And small moveset? Did you even play Unwound Future? f*** made a machine gun out of a slot machine. He'll do fine. He is the only solution to this puzzle.

I can only really see Mega Man, Pac-Man, or Layton making it in the game.
