P.S. Hope you don't mind Tupilluis, I used the SSF2 Mario and Link sprites out of your signature for the comparison

I feel like under the breast the rest of her torso needs to go a bit inward.

Funny you mention that, that's exactly what I just did :wee:

Also slimmed down the neck.

EDIT:

I might have a problem, I don't think I can stop working on this single sprite

EDIT2:

Your Rosalina looks good for a first attemp. Try to focus more in the shapes of the body/dace/dress. When you have the desired outline, go for the shading.
Luma looks nice.

Any shapes you're noticing specifically that need to be redone?

Done, and made some other adjustments to Luma.

She needs to be a bit taller, I think.

Done, does this look better?

The Luma's eyes are pretty stretched out.

But I applaud you for taking user criticism.

I somehow missed the whites of its eyes last upload, put those back in and lightened the edges of the eyes to try to shrink their appearance. Still too much?
And thank you, I definitely think its important to use criticism as a mechanic for bettering yourself and your artwork.

Nevermind, they are form SSF2 anyway, and it's always good to have the style and size of the game's sprites in mind XD

Focusing on your rosalina (your Luma is almost perfect, maybe just needs a midtone between the base color and the first shadow tone):

In my opinion I think that the main problem is the silhouette of character, specially in the midbody and in the hips. Rosalina wears a dress, but it's good to show that she is a woman.
The pose looks a bit like... a stick. A good method to see that fast is painting all black and see the silhouette:

Here you can see that mario and link have a dinamic pose, and your Luma, even withouth the color, is recognizable and looks good.
But with rosalina you can see the troubles, in the midbody is just a rectangle without more shapes, and the arms are a bit unnatural. I marked them with the green lines
I suggest you to first work with the black silhouette and when the character looks good, go for the color and shading.

Here I show you a fast little modification to the hips, midbody, botton dress and arms to show my point.

Here I show you too a Rosalina Sprite that I found in Deviant art. There you can see that... well, maybe is a bit oversexualized, but that's better that don't have any woman's shape in your Rosalina (and looks better, at least for me, as a man XD )
Take notes of how that sprite maker did his Rosalina (pose, shapes, shading... etc) to learn a little bit from him ;)

Wow, thanks! This whole post was really helpful. I'm jealous of that guys, tho, whewww, haha. I did work a lot on her shape in those edit updates, but looking at your modified silhouette, it might not be a bad idea to really exaggerate the pinch and take it in another pixel or two. That's why I love sharing work and getting feedback, it really turns even individual spriting into a sort of community project. Thanks again for all the advice!

EDIT: This is the most recent version, btw:

Image

EDIT2: Softened the outline, changed the color scheme of the wand, adjusted the torso anatomy some more, made a couple other minor adjustments, and tried to fix up Luma's shading, adding in another shade as suggested.

And here's her current silhouette, arms removed so you can really see the shape of her body.

Bam!

Thinned out the waist slightly more, and redid the bottom of the dress.

looks like it's shaping up much better

with the recent change in the dress i'd try to move the split in the middle of it over to the right maybe 3 or 4 pixels so it's lined up with the way she's facing

If there's no further critiques I'd like to begin sheeting, but I need to find a way of checking the height ratio first.

Height ratio can be done in Flash. As long as it isn't a major size change, it shouldn't really matter.

In other news, I feel as though the dress should be a bit more rounded. It doesn't follow Rosalina's hips. I also feel like the chest could use a bit more work around it. I keep seeing it as a chestplate.

Well, if you look at pics from SSB4, it never really is rounded around her hips, it's a loose flowing dress

Idk, is it just me?

I can definitely fix the chest though.

It still is too straight. It needs a bit of roundness to it. Otherwise it looks a bit artificial.

What I assume they're trying to say is that it looks too straight, whereas Smash 4's is a bit smoother, and does have a rounder feel.
