SSF1 wasn't always going to be a Smash fan game. It was going to be a side-scrolling action platformer starring Blade. Hell, the original April 2006 demo's filename is "blade.swf". You know Race to the Finish? The whole game was gonna be like that. Luckily, though, Cleod realized how easily the engine could be tweaked into a Smash fan game. More characters were added around Blade and Blue, but they were still the first ones there. (And Samus, but she was initially a placeholder for a generic enemy.)

They belonged to a close friend of Cleod's known at the time as KingdomCastleAnimations, who made sprite comics and simple sprite flash movies exactly like you'd expect someone who made Sonic OCs in the mid-2000s to make. His website disappeared sometime in 2007, though, so we're not sure where the guy is now.
