[Wii] Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Hacking)
Welcome to the wonderful world of hacking!
So far, the Brawl community has come so far as to be able to pretty much add, remove or modify anything they like from the game and through a very simple process, we, the uneducated wider community, can do it too!
There are five types of hacks that I'll mention here
1. Texture hacks: These are changes to the colour scheme of a certain character or stage.
2. Vertex edits: These are modifications of the bones of a certain character so that they're in a different shape, but still in a shape so that it can perform its moves without hack number 4.
This is a combination of a vertex edit and a texture hack
3. Model imports: These are imported models of models from a different game, be it a character, stage, whatever. Previously, this meant that the bones were all different and so they're practically useless for characters without hack number 4, but now they are being seamlessly integrated into the Brawl scene.
4. PSA Hacks: These are modifications of the moveset of a particular character, be it to make them stronger, more balanced, a better representation of a different character, or just for kicks. These will be covered in more depth later.
5. Other: this is really the only name for it, this can include anything from allowing infinitely long replays to having unlocked everything to removing the timer if you want to play previous games.
Once you've downloaded that and you have the channel, you'll need to setup your SD card so that you have a folder called "apps".
Inside the "apps" folder, you will need to put Gecko in there
This means that you should have, in X:\apps\Gecko193 (X representing the directory of your SD card), boot.elf, icon.png and meta.xml.
Once you've done that, create a folder called "private" and a folder called "codes".
Inside the folder called "private", create a new folder called "wii" and inside that a folder called "app" and inside that a folder called - RSBE if you have an American wii - RSBP if you have an Australian/European wii - RSBJ if you have a Japanese wii Inside that folder, make a folder called "pf" and inside that make a folder called "figher".
Inside this folder, create a bunch of folders. Not all of these are necessary for you to have a texture hack. Only the one for the character you want to modify (eg. you'd only need a Captain folder if you only have Captain Falcon hacks). The names of the folders can be determined using the box below
Once you've done that, find the texture hack you want, rename it (explained in the OP) and place it in the corresponding folder. The name of the hacking file should be "Fitxxxxxyy" where x represents the name of the character (it's the same as the folder names outlined below) and yy represents the slot number. I've given some recommendations in the OP, in case you want to use mine. Otherwise use the folder labelled "Texture Numbers", also in the OP in order to choose which slot you'd like to replace.
Remember, the only restrictions are the number of character slots and the space on your SD card.
The text before the dash is the name of the folder. The text after the dash represents the character who is affected by the texture hack
Captain - Captain Falcon Dedede - King Dedede Diddy - Diddy Kong Donkey - Donkey Kong Falco - Falco Fox - Fox Gamewatch - Mr. Game And Watch Ganon - Ganondorf Ike - Ike Kirby - Kirby Koopa - Bowser Link - Link Lucario - Lucario Lucas - Lucas Luigi - Luigi Mario - Mario Marth - Marth Metaknight - Metaknight Ness - Ness Peach - Peach Pikachu - Pikachu Pikmin - Olimar Pit - Pit Pokefushigisou - Ivysaur Pokelizardon - Charizard Poketrainer - Pokemon trainer (the actual trainer) Pokezenigame - Squirtle Popo - Ice Climbers Purin - Jigglypuff Robot - ROB Samus - Power suit Samus Sheik - Sheik Snake - Snake Sonic - Sonic Szerosuit - Zero Suit Samus Toonlink - Toonlink Wario - Wario Wolf - Wolf Yoshi - Yoshi Zelda - Zelda
1. I like to keep the original texture as a general rule of thumb. 2. I refuse to put up textures which are purely designed for sexual fantasies (ie. Nude ZSS etc.) 3. Every link contains pictures and a download link. 4. Italics = Noteworthy but there's not really a spot for.
Mr. Game and Watch Mr. Game and Watch is a funny case due to the fact that each skin only has two colours. There is a program that allows you to choose which colours are in each slot, called the GWitzer. The program is incredibly straightforward, you probably don't need a tutorial.
At the moment, there are several groups trying to make 'packages' with all the potential we currently have now. The two main ones are Brawl- (which seems to be dying at the moment) and Project Melee/P:M, my preference being the latter.
Brawl- is a mod that is designed to make ALL characters ridiculously broken. 0-death combos are certainly not uncommon. When I say broken, I mean broken. Fox is much better than his Melee version and MK is so much better than his Brawl version. Here's an old promotional video I found:
Having played it, I really like the idea, but the fact that they refuse to modify animations and hate any element of randomness means that it both looks unprofessional and comes at the expense of some of the things that made it truly awesome. It becomes too counter intuitive and was quite buggy for me, both aspects really turned me off
P:M is a mod which works towards making Brawl more like Melee. Things like the Melee air dodge, Melee movesets and the like have all been added. The characters have been balanced and new characters and past low-tiers (eg. Bowser) have had buffs to make the cast all at about the same level of Fox. In other words, the cast is almost broken, but remains reasonable. Most of the team was also involved in the creation of Brawl Plus which, while ended up unsuccessful, had a glory period which reflects their ability. The team seems to have learned from the past mistakes and have put together a really solid build. As of yet, there is a demo version but it's not recommended that you use it, both by me and the team, as it is so outdated.
Three videos which I really think summarise their works 1.
: buffing old low-tier characters 2.
: redefining new characters 3.
: physics demonstration and restoration of high tiers
The next version will probably be out in about 2 months, but don't take my word on that.

Saw these elsewhere. These are AWESOME. I especially like the tex-hacked Dry Bowser, Mr. L, Shiny Charizard, Shadow/Metal Sonic, and Cloud characters. Those would be really neat to play as... even if they're just characters with different costumes on. But hey, every time I play as Lucas with the Claus get-up... I really feel as if I'm playing as a different character. (Same applies with the Daisy-oriented Peach suit.)
Mmhmm, so I've heard. Apparently they haven't released any information on how to make these yet, which is a shame. But, hopefully one day they do. If I ever bother trying something like this, I'd probably try out the Shiny Charizard first. The Metal Sonic and Shadow tex-hacks would be right behind.
That Lucario tex-hacked one... still perplexes me, though.
