 Re: Kirby/+Custom Animations
The Up tilt (Star Palm) is done, and the Up Charge (along with a smash animation) is close to done. I've tried before to sprite the Up Smash, a sort of somersault backflip kick, but it looked really ippy, even on my rough concept drawings. I do know that Kirby kicks with his right foot from the Smash charge (followed by the left foot) and completes a backflip, but I am just not certain how he lands back on his feet. I'll continue trying to develop the Up Smash concept animation, and then post it here (it'll look better then it does right now, and that's for sure). Yoshi 2/3D Sprite
I had some spare time the other day to practice an attempt at designing a sprite to look 3D for when I decide to start modelling trophies. Since the Kirby trophy I've done a couple months ago, I decided to create a more complex character. Many minor shades of each color were used, and I avoided giving a outline on any of the outside curves. Done in MS Paint of course, with no solid black or pure white colors. This took about 3 hours and I am happy how it came out. The one trouble I see doing it this way for every character, is making them spin. I've begun working on Bealupia again in some of my spare time, I took a close look at what the project really needed. It didn't need a story at it's point, didn't need top quality sprites, what it really needed was a working engine... the engine I had before was rather ineffective at producing the effect I wanted, and was not as loose and customizable as it should be. I am working on a loose turn engine (I call it Turnmarks) that can indefinetely determine the order and any possible future changes, instead of generating it once and ignoring changes. (Please don't check the topic, as I didn't really update it yet, and don't plan to until it's presentable) To explain my absence, my computer monitor light dimmed last week to the point I could only barely see by holding an strong external light to it. I was able to back up all my work on the computer to three sources, and decided to take it in to a repair shop. Something about the monitor light burning out, and they told me it was going to be about 600 dollars! For a light? I could get a new computer for that! So I got a new Windows 7 laptop, and made sure to put warrantee on it, all for less then what I would have paid to repair my Vista. Everything is backed up and continuing where I left off.

That says more about you then about her. Shyan, excellent piece of work as usual. You really are one of the best.

 Re: Kirby/+Custom Animations
To wardek> Oh, sorry. Umm, I'm aware my grammar isn't too good. I try to spread out my topics in each post by dividing them into their own seperate paragraph... or did you mean the post itself is just too long to read. A lot of thought goes into my wording, and sometimes I have a lot to say, especially if I hadn't posted in a while. To Damian> That was a little harsh toward wardek, but to the second line: Thank you. ^^ Up Smash Concept I've made some progress about the Up Smash and am pleased with the first 3/4ths of it. However, I still can't figure out how Kirby lands back on his feet during the descent of the Backflip Kick, or how he positions his feet back into the stance after landing. Does Kirby land straight into his stance after the flips been completed? Or does he land in a different way and shift back into his stance? I'm trying to experiement this and come with a realistic animation. (I personally cannot do or even think of doing a backflip, frontflips are hard enough on a trampoline when I was younger.) If you can put into words how Kirby lands, please let me know and I'll try spriting it out. If all fails, I'll turn on and use the SSBB reference (and that hasn't been done since Kirby's vulcan jab).

 Re: Kirby/+Custom Animations
He lands in a stance similar to that "preparation stance" that you have before he does it, and then moves back into his stance. I suppose the best way to figure it out would be too look at it yourself in a video or game.

 Re: Kirby/+Custom Animations
Thank you Kirbyfan, I took your advice and decided to look up a resource.
I took a look at a video of a person playing Kirby in Melee, and fortunately the player missed at least one closeish Up Smash and I was able to get a glimpse of what it looks like. The first 3/4s of my previous concept is quite accurate to what I saw, but I now know what the last bit is. It really didn't look that hard to imagine, and I wonder why I hadn't thought of it by now.
Kirby completes the Backflip and flattens, his kicking foot still in front of him and his following foot flat on the ground under him directly parallel to our view (Kirby is sort of doing a 90% stance), from this point Kirby simply hops back into his regular standing animation.
I'm already beginning the spriting process again for this move, and I hope it will turn out well. I'll likely post a new demo once the Backflip Kick is done for both directions. It'll be up... soon!

 Re: Kirby/+Custom Animations
When designing that Yoshi, I didn't use a reference, instead doing the entire sprite on instinct. When I decided to Wiki Yoshi up for images, the neck on Yoshi is actually very narrow and indeed very short (the distance between it's Shoulder and Head/Chin). Instead of the neck curving outwards (like in the fix), it seems to be curving inwards. *Taken from Yoshi's page on Wikipedia My pallete was also very off, as Yoshi seems to have much darker skin color then I originally planned, oh well. It'll be fixed and corrected by the time I begin doing something with it. I'm been progressing on Kirby's Backflip, using every spare moment I can. Kirby's general body positioning along the sprite has been made, along with his kicking foot. It actually looks promising as it blends well with the Smash charge into the move then into the Stance. I'll still need to complete Kirby's other foot, both arms and his face before I can show it here (and that's just Kirby pointing right, it's already been... two days?). Oh, and it's my birthday today. March 3rd. I'm officially 23 now. ^^

 Re: Kirby/+Custom Animations
After working hard on the Backflip kick with every moment I could spare, it's finished! I must admit this animation tested my comprehension, as I had to figure how it actually works. The reference I admitted to before was used, but I changed a few parts of the kick to match my style. *Animated with Lunapic now that something's happened to gifworks, still converts down to 10 fps (it's faster in game). The light green background is the first frame in Kirby's standing animation and the first frame where it will become a smash point on release. Skip if you wish, the below quote is frame data and descriptions. | | | | Quote: The backflip kick is very peculiar in it's execution; Kirby kicks with his right foot, and his left foot follows. I've added a little bit of forward momentum during the initial kick, since Kirby must rotate slightly to put the foot ahead of him into a kicking position. I believe from this point, that his Left foot (still on the ground for a moment) pushes off the ground giving Kirby enough lift to complete the backflip. As Kirby completes the vertical rotation, Kirby's arcs it's right foot and touches down with it's toe, which brings Kirby backward as the foot settles in place. Shortly afterwards, the left foot touches the floor heel up and Kirby rotates again to propel itself to hop back into it's original standing position.
The backflip kick has about as much horizontal range as Kirby's spin kick, and has adaquate hit boxes above Kirby as well. If the move can hit on it's initial hit frame, it sends the opponent straight up with a force much stronger then Starpalm (depending on charge, it should likely KO around 80%-100% fully charged). If the kick hits them as the kick furthers it's rotation around Kirby, it will begin to send them in a sharp angle with considerably less power the longer the hit is delayed. Compared to Kirby's lunge kick, it's first hitting frame comes sooner, but it has greater recovery frames between the final hitting frame and the transition back into the stance.
That was probably a little hard to understand. | | | | |
What did you think? ^^ I'm beginning work on Kirby's left Backflip Kick, it shouldn't differ too much from the right since Kirby points directly forward as the kick is used. Points of main change will be the initiation and landing.

 Re: Kirby/+Custom Animations
I changed my previous post's bulk paragraph to within quote tags to make it easier to read. I get a little carried away when I describe (in full detail) what the animation does and shouldd look like. From now on, I'll put that sort of data within quote. Did you mean that the animation needed a fix, or the previous post to become more readable? I didn't fully understand this quote, as it seems to clash in meaning. First post has been updated! Take a look! ^^
